August 30th, 2018

Dear Band Parents and Students,

We are writing to share some very important news with you about our Tournament of Roses Parade Celebration Weekend.

We learned this afternoon (Thursday, August 30, 2018) that Mr. Gerald Freeny, 2019 Tournament of Roses President, will not be able to travel to Pickerington for our celebration.  Mr. Freeny is undergoing medical treatments, and the doctors have not cleared him for travel this weekend.  Dr. Parulekar spoke with Mr. Freeny by telephone this afternoon, and he expressed his sincere congratulations to the Pickerington Band Programs. He will do everything he can to reschedule his visit with us at a later date.  Please see the attached statement from the Tournament of Roses regarding Mr. Freeny’s cancellation.

But all great bands know: THE SHOW MUST GO ON!

We are excited to be hosting our 2019 Tournament of Roses Music Committee Liaison, Ms. Tiffany Gardner.  Ms. Gardner will be joining us for our weekend-long celebration of our outstanding band programs and our 5thappearance in the Tournament of Roses Parade!

Below are a few specifics for this weekend:

Road to Pasadena Dinner (September 2, 2018, 5pm)

We are very blessed to have a wonderful and rich history of successful band programs.  One of our Pickerington Band founding fathers, Dr. Paul Droste, is going to fill in for Mr. Freeny as our keynote speaker at the Road to Pasadena Dinner.  Dr. Droste was band director in Pickerington from 1958-1960 and again from 1962–1964.

He was also the director of The Ohio State University Marching Band from 1970-1983. During his time at Ohio State, Dr. Droste led The Ohio State University Marching Band in EIGHT Tournament of Rose Parades.

Dr. Droste will be sharing his story of the Road from Pickerington to Pasadena.  It will be a great evening of fellowship and amazing silent auction items with proceeds going towards Pickerington Rose Parade expenses.

Labor Day Ceremony in Victory (September 3, 2018, 11:30am)

Both the Central and North Bands will be performing at Victory Park following the Labor Day Parade at 11:30am.  We are excited to perform for you and will be recording the band performances and presentation to send to Mr. Freeny.  Ms. Tiffany Gardner, our Tournament of Roses Music Committee Liaison, will be representing Mr. Freeny and is excited to join us for this very special event.  We are looking forward to a great morning of music!

We will work very hard to make sure our Tournament of Roses Parade Celebration Weekend is a great experience for our students and community.

Thank you for your patience and support!  GO PICKERINGTON!

FYI - WEEK 2

The Otterbein Game Recap:
  1. A huge shout out to our chaperones and pit crew parents!  All of the band directors were very complimentary of how smoothly things went on the busses and at the game.  The first trip with the band is always a tough one.   I was extremely pleased with the outcome.  Thank you.
  2. All the parents in the stands cheering are awesome!  Continue to cheer and be extremely supportive.  It really does help scores at contests!!!  Not to mention it will either make the kids feel really supported or extremely embarrassed!  (I can’t wait until my kids are old enough to embarrass.)

Evening practices this week:
  1. Just a reminder: practices have been permanently pushed back by 30 mins.  5:30-8:30.
  2. Students traveling to the Rose Parade need to come in early tonight (8/27) or stay after to be fitted for their rose parade jacket.  This is the only night to get this done.  Please do not miss.  Chaperones will be fitted during practice.

Friday’s Game vs. WTP
  1. Report to PHSC at 4:15.  You must eat before you report.
  2. It’s too early to make the decision for Friday’s uniform.  Please stand by as this will be a decision for later in the week.  Just make sure all uniform parts are ready for summer uniforms or full purple uniforms.
  3. Students must walk back to the band room after home games to put away instruments and hang uniforms.  We ask they travel in large groups up the HS or get rides from family.  Each student is responsible for arranging transportation home after a game!  Please be sure you have communicated your family plans to all those involved.

Monday Labor Day Parade
  1. We will report to the PHSC band practice field at 8:00am.
  2. We will have a combined rehearsal with North Pride at 8:20 for the Central vs. North football game.  Leadership will help guide the newer members through what this actually means
  3. The big ‘surprise’ is that the President for the Tournament of Roses will be visiting the kids at this early practice!
  4. After meeting Mr. Freeny we will then line up for the parade to start at 10:00am.
  5. After the parade we will reform in Victory Park to perform at the annual Lions club Fish Fry.  This performance time always varies from year to year.  It’s a safe bet it will start immediately after the final parade unit has finished the parade route.
  6. After the Concert the ToR President will be signing posters for students. Please be sure to grab one.  (I know I will, these are a great keepsake and look good in a frame)
  7. Students have 45 minutes from the time the concert is over to return instruments and equipment back to Central.  Please plan your transportation accordingly.
