PHSC MARCHING TIGERS
Band Camp

Band camp is a week-long full-day program, with sessions typically beginning at 8:00 a.m. and lasting until 9:00 p.m. with a one-hour break for lunch and a three-hour break in the late afternoon for dinner.  Students usually have section dinners together at a home or restaurant.  Section leaders will inform each student, usually during pre-camp, the meal plan for each evening.  Each section also has its traditions year after year.

Band Camp is where the show is born and the kids work hard learning drills.  It is the start of the marching band season and the students spend time learning music, field positions, and bonding.  Again, tennis shoes are essential.  You will also want a large water jug and sunscreen.  A lanyard with a plastic pocket will also be used, sometimes section leaders and/or directors provide pieces of that.  Your student will want to listen carefully for instructions on this.

Attendance is mandatory.  If a student is unable to attend, they should contact Nathan Stowe (our band director) at [email protected] and submit a pre-planned absence form in advance.

A.  Food Breaks:
  1. Breakfast:
  • Please encourage your child to eat something for breakfast.

     2.   Lunch – 1 Hour: Students should bring lunches with them at the start of the day.
  • Lunch bags should have each student’s name clearly spelled out on the container.
  • Lunches will be stored in our refrigerators and accessible during designated breaks.
  • Students are not permitted to leave the premises.

     3.   Dinner – 3 Hour break:  Students must leave the premises and there will be NO adult supervision during this time:
  • Student drivers are free to leave the area to get dinner.
  • Some of our parent members host dinner for students. Students may need a ride and many times their section leaders will reach out to provide transportation. Students will receive information about the hosting parent locations throughout the week.
  • There are plenty of upper classmen band members who help with transportation to off-site places for dinner (e.g. BW3, Wendy’s, McDonalds, etc.) Please send students with money to pay for dinner as needed. The average cost is about $10 - $12. This is an excellent way for our band kids to bond and meet those upper classmates. Students will receive information about restaurant meeting locations from their section leaders during band camp if applicable.

B.  Activities throughout the week:
  • Group photos are typically taken on the last day of Band Camp (Friday)
  • Costume day: Many of the sections will have a costume day and will let their group know about the theme (e.g. super heroes, nerds, backward day, etc.)
  • Miscellaneous events such as talent contests, the parent concert, etc. will take place and information regarding each will be communicated daily to the students. Please ask your child(ren) when you pick them up at the end of the day for details.
  • Kona Ice has been a featured vendor over the years. The company often sets up a truck in the parking lot of the band field during Band Camp. Kona Ice gives a percentage of the profits to our band boosters.

C.  Miscellaneous:
  • Instruments and cases which will be secured in the band room. Students may leave them at the end of the day in our secured location. Please make sure each instrument case is clearly marked.
  • Comfortable clothing, tennis shoes and socks, and hats (if desired) are suggested. No halter tops, muscle shirts or bathing suit tops. Students  should wear tennis shoes.
  • If your student has a cell phone please make sure that it is charged. We have limited slots for this purpose.
  • Sunscreen is important. Make sure your child uses sunscreen before leaving in the morning and pack this in their duffle bag so they can reapply throughout the day as needed.
  • Each student should bring a water jug during practice. Hydration is critical.  We will have some breaks throughout the day for kids to refill those water jugs. Include their names on the jugs and fill them with ice.
  • Sun glasses
  • Bug spray is handy because they will be in the grass throughout the day and no matter how low the grass is those flying critters will find your child.
  • If students have previous knee/ankle injuries - please bring your own ace bandage or wrap to rehearsals.
  • If your student experiences any medical issues throughout an event or practice a director should be informed immediately.
